Ontario Government Makes It Easier For American Healthcare Professionals to Work in The Province
On June 5th, 2025, the Government of Ontario announced new efforts to strengthen the province’s healthcare workforce with U.S.-trained professionals. The changes will focus on making it easier and faster for healthcare professionals licensed in the United States to move to and work in Ontario.
What Are The Main Changes?
Previously, U.S.-licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and registered practical nurses were required to register with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or the College of Nurses of Ontario prior to beginning work.
They will now be able to work immediately, for up to six months, while working on getting their registration.
Previously, certain healthcare professions were limited to practising in public hospitals or long-term care homes, but new changes will broaden the range of settings permitted under Ontario’s “As of Right” rules.
What Does This Mean for American Healthcare Professionals?
For U.S.-licensed healthcare professionals interested in relocating to Ontario, these June 2025 updates really represent a decrease in the “red tape”.
While American citizens do still need to follow an immigration or work permit pathway to move to Canada, these changes make it easier to get working in Ontario without a long delay.
“Our government is cutting red tape to deliver real results for the people of Ontario. By streamlining the process for U.S.-licensed doctors and nurses to work in Ontario, we’re removing unnecessary barriers and accelerating access to care. This is a great example of how reducing red tape can strengthen our health-care system, support frontline workers, and ensure patients get the timely, high-quality care they deserve.”
How Can I Get Started?
If you’re a U.S.-licensed healthcare professional interested in relocating to Ontario, you can typically get started with the interviewing and hiring process directly.
Once you have an offer, you will only need to choose a suitable immigration pathway and submit your registration application to the relevant Ontario governing body before getting started. With the new changes streamlining the process, you may be able to relocate to Ontario and begin working within a matter of weeks!
Keep in mind that different professions may have different requirements. It’s important to check with your profession’s specific governing body, and ensure that you always have proof of your U.S. licensure on hand during this process.
